Types of exercises you can do with your dog.
Remember, any activity is better than none.
Not only will a short walk with your dog provide health benefits, but it will also stimulate the dog mentally. Allowing the dog to sniff around will stimulate its mental activity.
If your dog (and yourself) are sedentary, start with a modest activity goal. At a minimum, you should walk your dog daily.
Walking
Walking your dog is a simple way to activate it. It provides health benefits and mental stimulation for the dog. The dog also gets to spend time with you, which it will always crave. In addition, walking the dog helps its digestive system (and ours as well).
Running
If you're up for it, taking a run with a dog is great for the dog. Keep adding benefits from walking the dog. In the dog-sport world, running is also called canicross.
Cycling
Cycling with the dog will make it run even faster and increase its stamina, muscle growth, and metabolism. However, be careful when letting the dog run on hard surfaces like concrete or asphalt. The dog will be more prone to injuries such as paws, muscle and joint injuries. The best thing would be to do it on gravel or sandy roads and dirt tracks.
Another fun method of doing these cycling runs is by using a kickbike.
Skijoring
Perhaps cross-country skiing is better suited for Nordic countries, but it's great fun to cross-country ski with a dog pulling. It's also great exercise for the dog, as snow creates a soft surface for it to run on.
Playing
It's a great thing to do with your dog. It stimulates the dog in so many ways. Playing a round of fetch will make your dog run, have fun and burn energy. It also provides what matters the most for your dog: your attention.
Other activities
There is a long list of fun things you can do with your dog. You can participate in agility training, obedience training, nosework, and tracking. The list of things your dog can do is long.
Tracking your activity with the Furry Fitness app
When you use the Furry Fitness app, you can record your activities with the dog.
The app will use GPS tracking from your phone to record your exercises with the dog. The app will record distance and time for the activity you choose to do.
The app will also provide you with statistics on your activity level.
The app will also allow you to set a daily activity goal.
If you subscribe to the app's premium version, you will have access to integrations with Garmin and Apple Health (for Apple Watch users). So, you can make your chosen watch exercises with the Furry Fitness app.
Listed activities in the Furry Fitness app
Currently, we support the following activities, which we believe should cover you well regarding tracking exercises with your dog:
Play: If you select this activity, we will not trace and distance for you but trace time
Walking
Running: also known as canicross in dog sports
Cycling
Hiking
Skijoring: where the dog owner is directly connected to the dog's harness
Pulka: a nordic sled where the dog owner is behind the sled on skis.
Sledding: nome sled
Cart/Wagon:
ATV:
UTV:
You might ask why we list carts, ATVs, and UTVs. If you´re mushing as a dog sport, you want to know the dryland distances covered when training sled-dogs. Larger dog teams normally exercise the dogs with a cart, ATV, or UTV.
The app currently does not allow you to create custom activities because it shows you progress (accumulated distance and time data) from all activities and individual activities.
Setting daily activity goals for you and your furry friend
We strongly encourage you to use the app's activity goal feature.
We will show you progress on activities daily, weekly and monthly.
You can read more about this feature here.
Helping your dog get more out of the activities
Get them calories burning comfortably.
We would strongly recommend using a dog harness when you´re exercising your dog, even for ordinary walks. This is for the comfort of the dog and to prevent injuries.
Using a harness and allowing the dog to pull provides several other benefits.
PS! If you wear a waist belt, you will also make life much easier while the dog is pulling.
